Ludocracy Now

Erik could not afjord to pass up a chance to try out Twilight Struggle and although I counseled him to take the USSR, he slapped me and told me he would never play as those pinko commie bastards!  Then I beat him in a little over two turns.

At least we had time for a game of Fjords which I’ve now played seven times.

Caylubration continues!  Yesterday Erik Tom and I celebrated Syttende Mai and Caylubration with some Aquavit and Caylus!

After refreshing Tom on the rules, I got off to an early start by building right away and batching twice.  Erik decided to forgo batching in the dungeon section to amass a staggering amount of cubes.

I was in the lead for the whole game until the final turn when Tom built the 25-point prestige building to win by four.  The game ended before Erik could make good use of his resource hoarding.  “This game always ends quicker than I want it to.”  I, on the other hand, would have liked to see one fewer round since I never deigned to pick up gold.

Brekke and I played a quick round of Fjords to end the day.

Caylus is a great game, I’m thankful for Caylubration for giving me an excuse to get it to the table.  Plus, Erik said he wouldn’t play Burgundy until he played Caylus again so maybe we’ll finally play it!  Until next time.

Nothing beats a nice Monday game night, especially since it can distract you from watching your favorite baseball team implode.  Am I right?

Anyway, Jake came over for 3 rounds of Fjords (I won 45-41) and 4 rounds of ConHex (I won first three, Jake took the fourth).  Erik showed up and although I again put Castles of Burgundy up for suggestion, we turned to Hansa Teutonica, as I was eager to avenge my miserable last place showing.  Jake complained of never having a coherent strategy while Erik and I blocked each other as much as possible.  I let my score marker sit at 18 points as I tried, and failed, to expand my network.  When Erik ended the game with the final bonus marker, Jake’s six office network multiplied by a filled key skill gave him the edge for a beginner’s win.  Very difficult game to tell who is winning during the course of the game.

We finished with a not pictured game and a half of Taluva.  Jake and I both built our final tower on the same turn each with seven huts left.  He, however, was ahead in turn order.  I managed to go out right after him for second place with Brekke in a distant third, bewildered.  Another very difficult game to analyze.

Great fun, and some possible rounds of Cosmic Encounter coming up tomorrow night!  I am very excited.

Jeff, my love my life, agreed to play nearly a full game of Fjords.  Probably because I was talking about it constantly for the past two days.  It was everything I’d hoped it would be.

Quick update.  Went to the Minneapolis Board Game Mania 38 this afternoon to pick up one of my tax return out of print purchases: Duel of Ages.  While I was there, I played my first game of Liberté.  I wish I had taken a picture because the audacity of the colors in this game are great.  I scored ZERO points in the first two turns but got some help by two other royalists to stage a counter-revolution and take the win.

Another of my TROOPPs showed up in the mailbox: Fjords.  Will certainly play this next Syttende Mai.

ALSO: My first online play of Reef Encounter is finishing up.  I forced the end game and ate all four shrimp.  Second player ate three and third will eat two.  Waiting for the final moves to see if I win!  Love Reef Encounter.

EDIT:  I win! Yay.
