Ok, so I’m catching up on my posts here!  Last Sunday I hopped down to Kassie’s for our Sunday gaming group and forced At the Gates of Loyang on those gathered.  I explained the rules twice (mostly for my benefit, really) and we all planted our home fields.

The card distribution round is a little tricky to figure out and trying to decide who best to partner with in the action phase is also pretty elusive.  I found that I would try to delay my card choices to steal the first player button and then the person I wanted to trade with would get the 2nd player button.  Pickles.

I managed to claw my way to level 17 with the rest of the group finishing up at 16 (if I recall).  I enjoyed this game, as did the rest of the group, and can see how maybe it takes a few plays before it really blooms.  It is very satisfying to combine your vegetables and helpers and customers into some big money combos to be sure.

We then brought out Munchkin which is a game I had heard much about and was glad to try.  I think Kassie’s brother put it best:  “It’s a game that’s fun even if you’re losing because it’s so cute.”  Also you can pretty much go from losing to nearly winning back to losing in the bat of an eyelash.

More later as I reveal what my board game secret Santa brought to my door step yesterday!
